Assignment # 8

This is my interview with Louis Riel:

(me) Santana: Welcome everyone to the Biography Channel. Today on the show I will be interviewing one of Canada's most famous and controversial people. This person goes by the name of Louis Riel. He was charged with high treason for leading the North West Rebellion. He had a trial that lasted four days. When the trial was finished he was sentenced to death. He is here to today to tell us his side of the story and to give us more information about his life. Welcome Louis Riel.

Louis Riel: Thank you, I am glad to be here.

Santana: I have to begin asking do you think it was a fair trial?

Louis Riel: No, I don't think it was a fair trial because I don't think they understand me, they don't understand my side of story what my life was like, what I have done to get here. Personally I don't think that my crime was that bad.

Santana: I heard that you had a mental health problem. Is that true?

Louis Riel: Well that is what my friends and my uncle thought. My uncle put me in a mental institution in 1876 near Montreal. I was released from the institution in 1877.

Santana: What did you do to make people think you were insane?

Louis Riel: Well, I tore up my clothes repeatedly , interrupted mass and sometimes smash ornaments and candles in a chapel. Something that I don't agree with is that my friends thought I was mental when i gave a blind beggar $1000. I thought that I was doing a good deed. It would be something Jesus would do so i was just following his path.

Santana: What do you think made yo do those inappropriate things?

Louis Riel: I don't really remember it was 133 years ago. but it was probably for attention or one of my religious beliefs.

Santana: Speaking about religious beliefs, I heard you are very religious.

Louis Riel: I am very religious, My family is Catholic. During my trial I was always praying for God to help me through this. In 1875 I had a vision that God chose me as " the prophet of the new world". I saw myself as the voice for the Metis.

Santana: Thank you very much for being on the show today Louis. I hope you had a nice time.

Louis Riel: Thank you very much. I had a splendid time on the show.I hope to come visit again.

Santana: Everyone give a big round of applause for Mr. Louis Riel. Before we end the show let us give a big thanks to Time Machine Inc. Without the time machine are famous friend would not be able to be here. See you next time on the Biography Channel.

Assignment #7

In this post I will be responding to Assignment #7.

Question a.) Which category of Canadian Personalities interested you the most? Why? Categories: we inspired, we founded, we fought, we built and we governed.

The category that interested me the most was We Founded. I was interested in this section because it was about people that founded places that were of need in Canada. They dedicated there lives to what they have founded

Question b.) Which personality interested you the most? Why?

The personality I chose was Lotta Hitschmanova. Lotta was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) on November 28, 1909. She helped found the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada. It is an organization that sends a small group of aid workers that sends supplies to Europe for relief and reconstruction. That happened in 1945. Before she came to Canada she was a journalist, but when the Germans came she escaped to France. She escaped Europe and departed for Canada. In Ottawa she was working as a postal censor for the Department of War services. Lotta was involved with the rehabilitation of children in Czechoslovakia. In 1945 she founded the Canadian branch of the Unitarian Service Committee. She continued with the organisation for 36 years. Her whole life she devoted her self to the service of others. She past away in 1990. She was a great person who helped others in need and that is why I chose her to be the personality to write about. Link 1 and Link 2

Question c.) Suggest three more influential Canadian personalities that could be
added to the site. Why did you choose these people? Which
                          categories would they fit into?

The three influential Canadians I chose are Roberta Bondar, Terry Fox and John McCrae. I chose Roberta Bondar because she was Canada's first woman astronaut. She is a great scientist and she inspired women because of her accomplishments. The category I would put her in is We Inspired. Terry Fox is a very famous and inspirational Canadian I was actually very surprised he wasn't on the website. His run to cure cancer inspired many to keep raising money for cancer. The category  I would put him in would be We Inspired. The third person I chose is John McCrae. He is famous for the poem he wrote called In Flanders Fields. He fought for are country and that is why I chose to put him in the We Fought category. Links to Roberta
John McCrae
Question d.) Which History-Maker did you have the most in common with?
Were you able to figure it out from the clues given? What do you share with that person? What are some things that are different between you and that person?

The History- Maker I was most in common with was Emily Carr. I was not able to figure out who the person was with the clues given. A thing we have in common is that I love to read and she wrote a book that won an award. I thing that is different between us is that she is a painter and I am far far away from being artistic.

Question e.) One hundred years from now imagine that students are learning
about Canadian History Makers and they discover you. What will you be remembered for? How were you a Canadian History Maker?Write a short profile of yourself imagining the contributions you have made to the future of Canada.

If students were learning about history makers and they came across me they would probably find something like this.
Santana B. a well accomplished environmentalist. She has written a book about how to save the earth. She is also a famous actress who has starred in many films. As a child Santana was always determined to be both and environmentalist and actress. She has also invented a appliances that use very little energy. She was a caring mother, an environmentalist, an actress and an inspiration.

Assignment #6

For this assignment I am supposed to write about an influential African- Canadian. The person I chose to write about is Portia White an African- Canadian singer.

To start off I am going to tell you about Portia white before she was a famous singer. Portia was born in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1911. She was the daughter of Reverend William Andrew White, a descendant of American slaves from Virginia and Izie Dora White of Mill Village, Nova Scotia. Portia was the third child of eleven. She had a very beautiful contralto voice. Contralto Italian for lowest female singing voice.

Portia White first started singing at the young age of six in a choir at her fathers church. Her family organized concerts to raise money for the church. When Portia finished her teaching training she started teaching at a school in Lucasville. She still continued her musical training at the Halifax Conservatory. In 1941 Portia had run into some good luck because she met a women by the name Edith Read, who was a principle of an all girls school in Toronto. Edith organized for her first Toronto appearance at the Eaton Auditorium. She became more famous and preformed in New York. She soon became international. She preformed in Canada, United States and Latin America in the years 1945 to 1948. One of her greatest achievements was when she was able to preform for Queen Elizabeth II. Unfortunately Portia White died of cancer at the age 57. In 1977 the Nova Scotia government created a special award for artists in her memory . She has accomplished some great things during her life. Assignment #5

In this Assignment I will be talking about the early Canadian settlers and what they did to survive the cold Canadian winter. alson I well be metioning about my family and what they did to survive the winter.

I can't imagine what the early Canadians had to do to survive the extremely cold winters in Canada. Some of the challenges they had to face were obviously keeping warm, finding food and building a durable shelter.

When the early Canadian settlers found out about the new continent, they decided to settle there to claim the land as there own. They called it New France.

The ways they dealt with the weather were to hunt caribou and seal. They used the animals for a variety of things that would keep them warm, provide food and make a shelter. They used the skin of the animals for clothing, blankets and tents. They ate the meat. There oil was used for cooking. The bones of the animals were very useful because the were made into tools which they used for hunting other animals and for cooking utensils.

My fathers family immigrated from Italy to Canada in 1966.They came to Canada for better opportunity of employment. My nonna which is grandma in Italian talks about the weather on a daily basis. Maybe that is due to the fact that her first Canadian winter came to as a shock.
My great grandmother and great grandfather on my mothers side also immigrated fom Italy to Canada. hey to came for better opportunity of employment.

My family and extended family have been in Canada for many years and have adapted to Canadian winters other then me I am still complaing that it is to cold to step outside the front door.

When I was looking for information about this topic it was almost literally impossible to find other then the link Mrs. Pollock provide which is
The Kids' Site on Canadian Settlement. All week I have been on the computer searching about how the early Canadians learned to deal with the cold Canadian winters and I find nothing about it which really put me down but when I read through the website Mrs. Pollock provided and it helped but I wish I could have found more information. I have learned that the early Canadians used what they had around the land and found ways to use it in many diffenerent ways and nothing was wasted.
